A 10-year-old girl riding an e-scooter Sunday in Niagara Falls was hospitalized with serious injuries after police said she was hit by a motor vehicle.
The child, who was not wearing any protective gear, suffered critical injuries to her head and legs. The Niagara Falls Fire Department rendered aid at the scene. Niagara County Ambulance Service transported her to Oishei Children’s Hospital, where she was immediately taken into surgery. Her condition is unknown at this time.
The victim was riding the scooter westbound on Marine Memorial Drive when she was hit by a southbound vehicle at 100th Street. Police said the driver had the right of way.
The driver did not suffer any injuries and has cooperated in the crash investigation.
The crash is the latest in what has become a trend locally and nationally. Last week, a 40-year-old man from Niagara Falls was injured when he rode his e-scooter into the path of a sedan at Maple Road and North Bailey Avenue in Amherst, town police reported.
A study found that sales of e-bikes and e-scooters have risen dramatically and with them so have injuries.
